The Council of the EU gave its final green light to the Digital Omnibus on AI on June 29, 2026, completing the first amendments to the EU AI Act and pushing back the high-risk compliance deadline that was set for August 2, 2026.
The new timeline splits in two: stand-alone high-risk AI systems now have until December 2, 2027, to comply, while AI embedded in regulated products gets until August 2, 2028. If you are building or deploying high-risk AI for the EU market, the August deadline you may have been racing toward is off the table, and you can replan against the new dates.
The amendments also add a new prohibition: using AI to generate non-consensual sexual or intimate content, or child sexual abuse material (CSAM). In short, the EU loosened the high-risk compliance schedule while tightening the rules on content abuse.
