On July 7, 2026, GitHub made the GitHub Copilot desktop app available on every plan, including Copilot Free and GitHub Education, on macOS, Windows, and Linux.

The Copilot app is a desktop application built for agent-driven development. With this change, you can install and use it on any tier, whether you are on a free, education, or paid plan.

You do not even need a Copilot subscription. The app lets you bring your own model provider keys, so you can run it against your own API accounts instead of a paid Copilot plan.

If you are on Copilot Business or Enterprise, there is one prerequisite: an administrator must enable the Copilot CLI policy before the app becomes available to your organization.
