US Plans to Sanction Chinese Companies Over AI Distillation
The US is preparing to use AI distillation as a new weapon against China. According to Axios: The White House says Moonshot AI crossed the line by secretly mass-copying Anthropic's Fable model to build Kimi K3. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Chinese companies accused of doing so could face sanctions or be placed on the entity list. In my view, this reads as distillation accusations now becoming a legal basis for being able and willing to ban Chinese open-source software.
